Ank E. Janssonius was born in Amsterdam and still lives there. She taught Geography at a high school and at the World Travel School in Amsterdam.
She says, “ I have always had interest in art. That is why I paint, sculpture and do ceramics. My mother painted professionally, she told me I had no talent for painting. But years later she took back her words.“
In 1968 Ank went to summer school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and there she worked on an excavation site of an Indian Pueblo village. This experience triggered her interest in carving stone when she returned home. Her teacher was Maarten Krabbé, the father of the famous actor Jeroen Krabbé . She says,“ That was the start of my artistic life.“
Around 1992 she began oilpainting, and also started sculpting in clay. So she worked both in two and three dimensional artistic methods. In 2014 she began making ceramics, which she has been enjoying ever since because this a combination of various art methods that she already mastered. She prefers ceramics until this day, and to her delight she has just started a ceramic week.
The subjects she chooses are different. A lot of times they go back to the time when she travelled a lot whilst she was teaching at the World Travel School. She wants her works to show her experience and her emotions .
Cutting stone is heavy work and, as she puts it “I do not do it anymore because it is too much for my body because I am 80 years old at this moment“.
She still does working in clay, does ceramics and paints in oil which render her the feeling of creativity and freedom.
Ank became a DKG member in January 1986. She was installed into Alpha chapter. She served as chapter secretary and has been chapter president for many years.
In 2001 she became a member of the International Travel and Study Committee.
She helped organizing the first regional conference in Breukelen in 1999 when Europe had become a region. When in 2013 the site for the Europe Regional Conference was Amsterdam, Ank supported the steering committee in many ways.
DKG The Netherlands had the celebration of their 45th anniversary this year, and again Ank was one of the organizers.
She is a dedicated member, and a wonderful host of numerous meetings at her house. Through DKG connections she enjoys many friendships.
