I am Päivi Pennala and I am textile artenomi (vocational examination), M.Ed. in craft and design education and M.Ed. in anthropology. I have been a member in DKG Epsilon chapter in Joensuu for 12 years.
I have worked in vocational secondary education as a teacher for years, and as a lecturer in design and research at the Karelia University of Applied Sciences. In that connection I have done research in the visual features related to locality. Since 2019 I have worked as the as the planning teacher at Juuka Adult Education Centre. In this job I am responsible for planning the courses in hand skills, arts, crafts and design. I teach myself textile crafts and design like weaving, sewing, knitting, crochet, textile dying and other related design areas.
The years at the University of Applied Sciences guiding students in their studies, projects and diploma works and doing research in craft and design were very interesting but theoretical. In my present work I have returned to my roots in concrete making and teaching. This has given rise to my own creativity and I have designed textiles for various purposes. My leading light has been local culture and the sense of community. I have wanted to create products, which portray the locality and serve the community.
Based on the heraldic coat of arms I designed Juuka sweater and Juuka socks for the local people. The instructions are freely available on the Juuka community website. I want that everyone has a possibility to knit their own village sweater and socks. Juuka community authorities have also ordered socks from local knitters to give as presents in different occasions.

I used the same birch tree theme to design a knitted sweater and socks for Taito Pohjois- Karjala (Artisan Society in North-Karelia). One can buy instructions and the materials package at the artisan centre in Joensuu, Finland.
The Karelian folk song ”Jo Karjalan kunnailla lehtii puu, jo Karjalan koivikot tuuhettuu…” - ”The Karelian trees are in leaf, the Karelian birch woods are thickening…” The Karelian birch woods are a concept, which local people feel as their own. The birch leaves and catkins circle shoulders in the circular yoke sweater.
In my art work I use several materials and techniques. My design works consist of everyday products as well as fine arts. In the pictures you can see knitted garments, macrame, painted china and felted art as well as paintings.
