My name is Soffía Vagnsdóttir, and I am in my sixty-eighth year. I can hardly remember a time when I was not creating something with my hands. It all began in a small storeroom on the upper floor of my childhood home, where I worked with plaster bandages, covering bottles and various objects before painting them. Later came the shells I collected and decorated in all kinds of ways. I began knitting at an early age, and I must not forget all the “fashion creations” I made for my Barbie dolls — there was a great deal of designing, cutting, and sewing in those days.

My path later led me into music teacher training, and throughout that journey creativity remained a strong companion, expressed through composing music for children, for theatre productions, and for various kinds of popular music.

Around fifteen years ago, I attended my first visual arts course in Akureyri, in North Iceland. From that moment, there was no turning back. I went on to take many courses with excellent teachers working within the upper-secondary visual arts curriculum, and after moving to Reykjavík, I have also taken part in several inspiring courses there.

Creating through visual art is endlessly joyful. The mind is free, and the images first take shape within it, though more often than not they look quite different once they arrive on the canvas or paper. Perhaps that is why, these days, I most enjoy simply approaching the canvas or paper with paint and brushes and beginning to play — following the flow and trusting the creative force. It is always deeply exciting to discover what emerges each time.

I have worked with acrylics, watercolours, acrylic ink, and charcoal, though never with oils. I find all of these materials especially rewarding and enjoyable to work with. I have taken part in several group exhibitions with fellow art students, and on one occasion I held an exhibition at my former workplace.

Since retiring from formal work, I have had more time to paint and create by hand. At present, I am also exploring wool as a medium, using the same intuitive approach: I engage with the material freely, laying down the wool as it comes to me, and then watching to see what emerges and how the work develops. Artistic creation brings me deep happiness and inner joy, and I can lose myself completely in its timeless flow.

I believe in a better world and in a higher vibration of life as the heavenly bodies move into new alignments. Astrologers say that the preparation for these shifts in frequency has already begun, and I choose to believe that a Golden Age lies ahead. In that Golden Age, love will be greater, and humanity’s respect for one another and for nature will be clear and pure, as self-interest and egocentrism give way to love, peace, beauty, kindness, and solidarity.

In my work, I allow myself to imagine a richer splendour of colour in figures, in small creatures, and in nature itself as it begins to recover from humanity’s excesses. My deepest wish is that we learn to look more closely, to see the beauty of the present moment and of daily life, instead of feeding on the relentless stream of news about war, grief, and disaster. Let us turn our attention to what is good and beautiful in our everyday lives and surroundings. In that way, light is carried across TERRA — the Earth. Let us do our part to nourish love through beautiful human connection and through helping others.
