Anna Handeland - Norway

It was with sadness and grief that we received the news of Anna's death, - but also very surprising, because only twenty days prior, on June 3rd, she stood as usual in front of her front door in Kristiansand, where she lived, waiting for a car to take her to Epsilon's summer celebration.
Many of us had noticed Anna becoming weaker physically during the spring, and maybe thought she had become forgetful. But she was still interested in current affairs, with a quick voice and a good sense of humour. She constantly expressed how much DKG meant to her and how much she wanted to be a part of the community. In 2022-2023, she rejoined the Epsilon board.
She had just lost her sister whom she was very close to and thought it would be good to be active. She had no intention of retiring from duties, even though she was approaching ninety!
Anna became a member of DKG on June 12, 1990, and has meant a lot to all of us, not least to those who counted her as a mentor. She held many positions of trust over the years: President of Epsilon, 2000-02, State President, 2001-03, and from 2008 as one of two parliamentarians for the State board. She was also active in editing and translating the Norwegian byelaws into English. Anna has also served on two international committees: Personal Growth, 2002-04, and Nominations, 2012-16.
Whenever she could, she attended international conventions and conferences, both in the USA and in the various member states of Europe. On two occasions I had the pleasure of being her roommate: both in Minneapolis and in Chicago. After a conference in Turku, Finland, she joined my husband and myself on a four-day trip to St. Petersburg.
Anna was easy-going and fun to travel with. She was knowledgeable, with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
Anna was a beautiful person whom we all admired and loved. It is sad to think that she no longer is with us. The message conveyed from Epsilon at her funeral defined Anna:
"You were a standard- bearer for our association, and a role model for us all".
Anna made many strong friendships through DKG, and both nationally and internationally, there will be many grateful for having known her, sharing fond and happy memories!
We light a flame of peace in fond remembrance of Anna's legacy!
