The Eta chapter board decided to focus on the 7th purpose of DKG: To inform members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.
One meeting was dedicated to the work on a new constitution for Iceland, the innovative process involved and the reason why there was no political agreement to continue with the process. Another meeting focused on the unprecedented growth in the tourist industry and what it takes in terms of protecting sensitive areas from overcrowding as well as offering the best service possible. Both these issues have been hotly debated around Iceland and the discussions following introductions by experts were lively.
One meeting was held in a school known for innovative teaching approaches. The headmaster is a member of Eta. We were informed about the ways learner autonomy and democratic work methods are practised with students with positive results.
We always have a traditional Christmas meeting and the highlight is a visit from an author who has recently published a book that has got favourable reviews.
Apart from the professional agenda, Eta sisters also emphasize having fun together. There are now 28 members and we are in the process of expanding.

From September of 2012 to May of 2014 the Alpha Chapter has focused on the “Keys of Society”. We then decided to narrow our focus further on education, communications, the arts and literature. We have had very interesting guest speakers and visited a school regarding the subjects mentioned above. We were pleased to have the newly elected bishop, Mrs. Sigurðardóttir, be one of our many honorable guest speakers.
One of the subjects discussed during this period of time was the possibilities for young male prisoners to obtain an education.
We held one meeting regarding the subject where the Director-General of Prison and Probation Administration (Mrs. Frímannsdóttir) and a student counselor (Mrs. Bjarnadóttir) informed us about the current state of affairs and education options available to male prisoners.
Needless to say an education is crucial for these young men and a lot of great things are already being done in the Icelandic prison system when it comes to education, like with most things there is always room for betterment. With the very ambitious people working with in the prisons system I am sure that improvement will continue.
We were also informed about the situation regarding young female prisoners, regrettably the situation for these women, when it comes to obtaining an education in prison, is not as good. This may in part be due to the number of female prisoners which is very low (5-10). This would be a subject for another meeting.
To conclude, the subject of one meeting was gender and how it influences opportunities, expectations and participation in society. Gender equality has for a long time been an important subject in the Icelandic community. Even though we have achieved great success in getting closer to equality for both genders the subject is relevant as ever and important to stay focused so further steps towards gender quality continue to be taken.
The boards goal was that each meeting would be memorable, educational, be characterized by good communications and friendship. It was also important to us that the meetings would leave members with something to think about. All of this with keeping the values of Delta Kappa Gamma in mind.
