The Kappa chapter, which was founded in 2007 within the Icelandic State Organization of DKG, has 24 members. 2013-2014 is the 7th year of operations.
Each year the chapter selects a motto, and the current one is "woman in the bridge", with a focus on women who are specifically engaged in society, are leaders and unafraid to walk against the current to enhance the way of women, for example in occupations that women have not been prominent or led and managed so far. This motto is derived from the well-established term in maritime language. "The man in the bridge" refers to the captain who stands in the bridge of a ship and steers the ship, all activities, takes decisions that make a difference for the catch and economy of his subordinates, or even between life and death. This term for captain is strong and rooted in our national awareness and expresses respect for the occupation, while implying a certain humour.
It was the idea of Kappa sisters to ask women within and outside the chapter to share their experience, not the least from their formative years of growth and maturity, from being a child and teenager with dreams of the future, until adulthood. These women told of how temperament, upbringing, parental motivation, ideals and education affected which path they chose. The women that have shared their experience and knowledge with the group are somewhat different and work in commerce, trade, technology, industry and education, but all share enthusiasm, clear goals and fighting spirit, which has made them "women in the bridge" that really affect their contemporary and are important role models for other women on the pioneering path.
Each year we have a book meeting, where Kappa sistes tell of works and authors that have marked footprints in their life.These book meetings are always content rich and certainly expand the horizons of participants, because we constantly surprise each others with a broad taste in literature and complex view of the subject. It has certainly been an inspiration to get to know the "women in the bridge". They have encouraged pro-activeness, and underlined how important the women capital is in all fields of society.
