Each year DKG California gives an Outreach grant of $500 to a member from either the Norway State (even numbered years) or Jalisco State (odd numbered years) organization. This helps the member selected with expenses for either the International Convention or the Southwest Regional Conference.
Astrid Helene Bie Skaaland, a member of Epsilon Chapter, Norway, was selected by Norway State to receive DKG California’s Outreach Grant for 2018. Astrid has been an active member of DKG since her initiation in 2001. She has served as Epsilon’s Chapter President several biennia, attended the Golden Gift Leadership/Management Seminar in 2006, served as Norwegian State President in 2008 and was on the planning committee when Norway hosted the 2009 European Conference. In addition, she has participated in several International Conventions. As a professional educator, now retired, she worked with adult immigrants and refugees, teaching Norwegian as a second language. She received her master’s degree in Psychological Health Care which enabled her to work with pupils suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
As she stated in a brief biography, “the reunion with my DKG sisters from all member-states and countries, is one of the highlights of the summer.” Astrid was excited to be back in Austin this July and meet new friends in California.
As an attendee at the DKG International Convention in Austin, Texas, Astrid was presented with her award of $500 at the California Event, held July 19, 2018. Astrid graciously accepted the award and thanked all the Californians in attendance.
